Who started the Mandometer Clinic?
Eating disorder patients from the Department of Psychiatry came to our lab and asked if they could use our machine to learn how to eat. One day, a senior physician came to our lab and asked if I could treat a starving anorexic that had just entered the emergency ward. Usually these patients are cared for by the psychiatric clinic, but this patient was denied care because of her poor physical condition, since she weighed only 29 kg (about 64 pounds). I said 'yes' and our program was started."
More than 25 years ago, Cecilia Bergh, became interested in how young women developed eating disorders. She eventually received a Ph.D. for her studies on this issue from the Karolinska Institute. Her collective experience has led to her prestigious accomplishments in development of Mandometer®, a breakthrough treatment treat for people suffering severe eating disorders.
Ms. Bergh, in collaboration with Per Södersten, Ph.D., head of the Section of Applied Neuroendocrinology, Karolinska Institute, developed this novel treatment for anorexia and bulimia nervosa. An important part of the Mandometer® Treatment is a research program for the study of eating disorders. Results of the research are regularly published in prominent medical and scientific publication, and have been an important aspect of gaining recognition for Mandometer Treatment by the medical and scientific community.
Other positions she has held include: Senior Administrative Officer for the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare in Stockholm; Development Manager at the Psychiatric Clinic at Huddinge University Hospital; and Section Manager, Anorexicentrum IHR division, Center for Endorcrinology and Metabolism and the Neurological Clinic, Huddinge University Hospital. In 1994, Drs. Bergh and S–dersten founded the Section for Applied Neuroendocrinology at Karolinska Institute, which makes it possible for them to simultaneously direct both the clinical and research operations at Anorexicentrum.
In 1988, she received a Doctor in Medical Science from the Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institute.
Drs. Bergh and Södersten travel the world to be frequent lecturers at medical and scientific conferences on the topic of eating disorders. They are considered subject matter experts and are frequently requested by the press and medical community to comment on leading research on eating disorders.
They have co-authored more than 75 articles and research studies focusing on anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, satiety, psychopharmacological treatment of patients with eating disorders and more. Their research is widely published in prominent medical journals such as Current Opinions in Pediatrics and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
She is a member of The Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior, Association for Pathological Gambling, Association for Anorexia and Bulimia, and The Swedish Society of Medicine.
Dr. Bergh and Dr. Södersten are residents of Stockholm, Sweden.
